How to choose the right chains for my trailer?

Choosing the right chains for your trailer is essential for safety and durability and there are some important factors that we need to consider.

 Type of Trailer

Lightweight trailers (e.g., small utility trailers): Plenty of chains can meet the needs of lightweight trailers.

Heavy-duty trailers (e.g., RVs, boat trailers): Use higher-grade chains that are more durable and meet the weight requirements.

 Gross Trailer Weight (GTW)                                                

Check your trailer’s Gross Trailer Weight (GTW), which is the combined weight of the trailer and its maximum load. The minimum breaking load of chain should beyond the GTW. The chain’s breaking strength should be equal to it or better than the GTW.

 Chain Grade

The grade of chain plays an extremely important part in trailer. It needs to be paid more attention to and there are some grades:

Grade 30 (Proof Coil): Light-duty general-purpose chains.

Grade 43 (High-Test): Medium-duty, commonly used in transportation and agriculture

Grade 70 (Transport): Heavy-duty chains, ideal for load securement

Grade 80/100 (Alloy Steel): Highest grade, used for heavy lifting and rigging.

 Length and Fit

Ensuring the chain is long enough to move smoothly, but not overlong that makes it drags on the ground. Safety chains should form a crisscross pattern underneath the trailer when attached to the tow vehicle.

 Hooks and Attachments

Using S-hooks or clevis hooks with safety latches to securely connect the chain to the towing vehicleHooks should be rated to handle the same load as the chain itself.

Corrosion Resistance

Choosing electro galvanized or hot-dip galvanized chain if your trailer is always exposed to harsh weather or moisture, as these offer better corrosion resistance.

 Legal Requirements

Different regions have specific laws about the use of trailer chains. Ensuring your chains meet local legal requirements (e.g., number of chains, strength, and how they must be attached).

 Inspection and Maintenance

Regularly inspecting your chains for signs of wear, rust, or damage. Replacing chains immediately if they show signs of weakness or degradation.
